Hello Family and Friends of Amanda Rowe School,

Despite the transitions and changes, we have settled into a routine at Rowe and things are running smoothly. This time of year, right before April break is always a long stretch and it isn’t quite warm enough to feel like spring, yet we are all so ready for warm sun on our faces.

The principal position has been posted and the process of finding the perfect candidate will begin in the next few weeks. Assistant Superintendent Jeanne Crocker will lead the process.

In the meantime, we are already preparing for next year, believe it or not! We are engaging in deep discussion and reflection on our four pillars, Project Based Learning, Community Engagement, Multi-year Relationships and Sense of Smaller School within a School to identify parts of our practice that are going well and areas we want to grow. We look forward to sharing more with you about our reflections. We are also preparing for Kindergarten registration, open house, 5th grade end of year celebration, and class placements.

I haven't been reading at lunch to the 1st and 2nd graders as often as I would like to because I find myself needing to be in many places at once during the day. We found a cool resource called, Storyline Online which is a website where famous people read books out loud. The students really seem to enjoy it. We are also in the process of looking at three lunches and three recesses. I have received an increased number of calls and emails from you as parents since we combined two learning communities into one large recess. Our Leadership Team will be looking at that this week for possible changes.

One of our increasing areas of focus is the courtyard garden. It is getting warmer so it feels like planting time. We would like to invite you to be part of our courtyard garden work as we look to open the garden this spring. The garden is more than a planting space, it was designed to be the heart of Rowe School. Due to its location in the middle of our school, partnered with our commitment to project based learning, our garden will be the outdoor classroom space we have been craving while fenced off from the outside for this year. We are very excited about the possibilities and we invite you to join us on our journey. Please contact me at sirois at portlandschools dot org to get involved.

Playground Grand Opening

We are so thrilled to announce the plan to open our new playground on April 22nd! We are waiting on city inspections to allow us to open. Thank you to Portland Trails and Daniel Bishop for all the incredible hard work and dedication to completing the natural features projects. You may see Daniel out there working if you drive by the school, he has been working rain or shine to meet our deadline. We are planning a big opening celebration on April 22nd, most likely in the morning so please mark your calendars. Stay tuned for more information about this exciting event!
