MESSAGE FROM DAWN AND SARAH

Welcome to 2019! We have launched the new year with great energy and enthusiasm. Our learners returned to school rested and ready to learn. We have launched a new phase in the design and implementation of our project based learning units this month with more information in our grade level updates below. Our January newsletter is rich with many updates and details. We hope that this communication supports your close connection to all of our important work. We are so proud of all of our learners and their focus and commitment.

As we continue to navigate the winter months we will try to go outside every day. Our district cut off temperature for outdoor recess is a temperature of 13 degrees or feels like 13 degrees with wind chill factor calculated in. We appreciate all of your efforts to ensure that learners are dressed warmly. We continue to monitor students who need assistance with this. We appreciate all of your donations to our winter clothing closet, they are greatly appreciated.

OUR COMMMUNITY

Officer Coreena Behnke of the Portland Police Department Community Policing Division has created an opportunity for Portland Police officers and Nike employees to team up and teach basketball skills to Rowe 3rd, 4th & 5th graders during their physical education classes over the past several months.

Nike reached out to the Portland Police Department who reached out to Rowe to begin a partnership. Kaitlyn Ross, a Portland Police Department spouse, is the manager at the Freeport Nike Store and she had the great idea of working with officers and her staff to start a program called Baskets with Badges. This program brings together Portland youth, Nike and Portland PD and builds a relationship through the game of basketball. Nike has a community outreach program where they donate money to an organization for every hour that their employees volunteer. The moneys earned through this program will be donated to Portland PD's youth services division to continue building the PD's relationship with youth in the community through our various initiatives to include Shop with a Cop and Cop Camp.
